Mahila Samakhya and Balika Shiksha
Introduction
The Mahila Samakhya (MS) programme was initiated way back in 1989 in India to translate the goals of the National Policy on Education in to a concrete programme for education and empowerment of women, particularly from socially and economically maginalised groups.
Goal
The overall goal was to create circumstances to enable women to better understand their predicament, to move from a state of abject disempowerment towards a situation in which they can determine their own lives and influence their environment and simultaneously create for themselves and their family an educational opportunity which serves the process of their development.
Objectives
The specific objectives of Mahila Samakhya are as follows:-
- Enhance the self image and self confidence of women
- Enable women to recognize the worth of their contribution to society and the economy
- Create an environment where women demand knowledge and information thus empowering them to play a positive role in their own development and the development of society
- Generate awareness among women to make them understand their role in family and society so that they gradually participate in decision making processes and become capable to demand education for themselves and their children
- Provide women with necessary support structures to create time in their lives for education
- Create informal education structures which respect women’s pace and rhythm of learning, given multiple demands of households and changing agricultural seasons
- Build mechanism that enable adolescent girls working in their homes, in agriculture and in formal/informal sectors to get an opportunity for formal education through residential programmes
- Revitilise the existing educational structures to ensure their own education and education of their children
- Empower women to work in organized manner to fight again social evils affecting them largely
