    Elementary Formal Education

The objective of the Jharkhand Education Project Council is to achieve the goals of universal of Elementary Education. Universalisation of Elementary Education aims at achieving universal participation, universal retention and universal achievement. As a follow up, to achieve these objectives this year too, enrolment drives and rallies were organized in all the districts. Schools having 100% enrolment of children in their feeder area hoisted the SSA flags for public knowledge and transparency. District-wise enrolment in the formal schools (excluding private schools) in Class I-V & Class VI-VIII may be seen in the table given below.

Key interventions other than Civil works under this component were as below -

a)     Up-gradation of Education Guarantee Scheme Centres (EGS)

        Viable EGS centres are upgraded into formal school so that all habitations could be served with quality primary schooling. In 2005-06 7,621 EGS centres were upgraded into Primary Schools.
 
b)     Up-gradation of Primary Schools

        With a view to ensure Upper Primary Schooling at a distance of not more than 3 KM, Primary Schools are upgraded into upper primary schools. During 2005-06 1,100 Primary Schools were up-graded into Upper Primary Schools.

c)     Providing Additional teacher in the schools.
       
        In school having teacher pupil ratio more than 1:40, a provision was made to provide community teacher so that, the teacher pupil ratio is maintained around 1:40. The community teacher is selected by the concerned Village Education Committee (VEC). Such teachers get honorarium @ of Rs.2000/- per month for untrained and @ of Rs. 2500/-per month for trained teachers. In all 18,796 community teachers were placed in schools by the village education committee during 2005-06.   

d)     Providing School Grant

        The project provides a grant of Rs. 2000 to each school on annual basis. This grant is utilized by the schools for meeting its day to day requirements as well as on whitewashing, for procuring furniture, making/repairing black boards, procuring radio sets etc. 

e)     Providing Repair and Maintenance Grant

        The project provides a grant of Rs 5000 to each school on annual basis under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. This grant is utilized by the schools on repair and maintenance of school building.
